There are moments in life that remind you just how powerful stories can be, and sitting down with Anne Walker was one of those moments we will never forget.
Just weeks before celebrating her 100th birthday, we had the absolute privilege of spending time with Anne, who was born in May 1926. Our remarkable Anne has been a member of The Greens The Entrance for more than 68 years. Her warmth, humour, and sharp memory made this experience not just meaningful, but truly inspiring.
In the video below, Anne takes us back to where it all began – growing up on Mann Street in Gosford, a very different place from what we know today, the commercial hub of the Central Coast, teeming with shops, pubs, cafes and stores. With vivid detail, she shares what life was like in those early years, before moving out of home in 1942. At just 16 years old, during the uncertainty of wartime, Anne relocated to The Entrance to open up a hairdresser’s shop with her older sister.
It was here she met the ladies of The Entrance Bowling Club, who often came in to get their hair done. They convinced her, albeit over time, to join up as a member. Her stories paint a beautiful picture of community spirit, and remind us of a time when life moved at a different pace. From her early days at the club to the friendships she has built over decades, Anne’s journey is deeply intertwined with the history of The Greens The Entrance itself.
Since we filmed, Anne has celebrated her 100th birthday at The Greens The Entrance. Listening to her reflect on nearly a century of life was both humbling and uplifting. Her perspective reminds us how important it is to cherish our communities, honour the past – and celebrate the people who help shape the places we love.
We are incredibly grateful to Anne for sharing her memories with us – it’s an experience we will treasure and look back on fondly.
